Veterinary Pet Health Insurance

Veterinary Health Insurance Review #1:

veterinary pet health insurance picI have used Veterinary Pet Health Insurance (VPI) for about a year and a half after getting my kittens. At the time, I didn't have an emergency money fund for pet bills, and wanted to be covered in the case of a big emergency. I have three cats, and give them the best care. Basically, you visit the vet and take along a claim form. You have the vet sign the form, pay for the bill, and then get some money back from VPI. The turn around is a couple of weeks.

The biggest down side is that you have to pay up front for all of the costs, as well as doing all of the paperwork. One of my cats contracted a serious infection, necessitating many vet visits and hundreds of dollars in costs. VPI wouldn't reimburse any of the bills, because the specific infection was not covered. They exclude a large number of illnesses, even certain types of bacterial infections. I would read their exclusions very carefully. They don’t even cover routine care like vaccinations unless you purchase the additional rider. For me, it just wasn’t worth the money. I’m still looking for another pet insurance company.

Veterinary Health Insurance Review #2:

We are using Veterinary Pet Health Insurance (VPI). We have three cats and two dogs insured under it, and we got it after we had two cat emergencies that cost us about five grand total. We decided that the pet insurance would be a good backup in case something like that happened again.

The pros are that when we had another cat emergency (bad luck), we got about $600 of it covered, out of $1800. Granted, it isn't as much as we'd hoped, but the insurance for that kitty was more than covered right there.

The cons are that it is expensive (for the five pets, about $1000 for the year). Also, it seems as though more could be covered. Also, I had to submit a lot of different forms and appealed when I thought I should have gotten more money the first time. But on the other hand, it's nice to have in case of emergency.

Still not sure?

Maybe VPI is not for you.  There are many other possible options available to make sure your pets are covered in a medical emergency.  Check out another pet insurance review here on this page.
